This song is dedicated to my Granddad, although I never called him Granddad - we all called him Pop. He spent his working life working on Liverpool's docks. I wrote this song at the end of the Liverpool Docks dispute in recognition of the striking dockers whose fight was aimed at preventing the sort of conditions that Pop and his workmates had to endure.
My granddad was a docker
They put him in a pen
He stood and fought for work each day
Like all his fellow men
My granddad was a docker
He'd never tell a lie
He'd always give it to you straight
And look you in the eye
My granddad was a docker
He'd never let you down
With hand and brain together
He helped to build this town
All I'm sayin' with hand and brain
He helped to build this town
My granddad was a docker
So genle strong and true
His labours they were many
But his wages they were few
My granddad was a docker
Beneath the open skies
He toiled with his body
And he smiled with his eyes
My granddad was a docker
He'd never let you down
With hand and brain together
He helped to build this town
My granddad was a docker
They put him in a pen
He stood and fought for work each day
Like all his fellow men
My granddad was a docker
He taught me right from wrong
He lives within my heart now
As he helps me write this song
My granddad was a docker
He'd never let you down
With hand and brain together
He helped to build this town
All words and music
