This song is from a female perspective and is really dedicated to the women of Liverpool's yesteryear. Liverpool is a port, and as such many of its men were sailors in order to earn their daily bread.
Imagine falling madly in love with somebody only for them to leave for months on end with no email, no mobile phones, just the occasional postcard. This story was a common one in Liverpool. This is for all those who endured it.
I stand at the dock
I look out to see
I stare at the clock
On the building next to me
I know you are gone
And you'll sail back someday
But time drags so slow
While you are away
And I'll search for reasons
To keep me as strong
I look at the Mersey
And hear our song
For all of this water
Is joined to where you are
And I beg of it to pull you back to me
Your baby is born
She sleeps in my arms
Wrapped up in her shawl
To keep in the warmth
Now a Mother with child
I look out from the quay
And long for the time
When you're swept back to me
I'll suffer this wind
That the river brings in
My heart is not cooled
All it chills is my skin
I curse at these waters
That part us once more
You sail on its tide
I stand at its shore
All words and music
