There's a guy in Liverpool called Eric Lynch who organises these superb walking tours of Liverpool's waterfront. He explains the city's role in the slave trade during these tours and I'd highly recommend it (www.slaveryhistorytours.com).

One of the thing he's very good at is pointing out the carvings in the buildings - the African faces, the pots of money, dolphins, Trident and the like - markings that glorify the slave trade that made those who financed the buildings rich.

The most striking is a large carving of two naked African children back to back in manacles. Neptune is stood over them with his hands pressing down on their heads. It's a grotesque image, all the more so for its unashamedness. Thanks to Eric for helping to inspire this song.

Lyrics

They sold me to the Christians
God help their souls
Shackled two by two
In some vessel hold
They're counting out their money
As they sing praise to their Lord
Claim insurance as they toss us overboard

Two children shackled under Neptune's Hand
Carved in a city wall, I hope you understand

We landed in a biting climate
Brought out in chains
Sold me to a vicious Master
He changed my name
Days are long and brutal
Oh few grow old!
Life is cheap in this land
But sugar is gold

Read the buildings and you'll see
All the city's history
Is laid out for you to see
Take a look at slavery
